Here’s 3 Tips for Social Media.

Help!

I’m speaking to business owners almost every day.  The one thing that most people managing a business social media account struggle with is content.  They either don’t know what to post, when to post it or what is appropriate.  So here are some tips that I regularly share with businesses (well, the people behind the business!):

Tip 1: It’s not all about “buy me”

Remember the 80/20 rule?  Basically, 80% of your content should not be about buying your product or service.  20% of content can be.  So simply put, if you are posting content on social media 5 days a week, then 4 of those days will be providing useful content.  Just one of those days will be about “buy me”.  This might come as a surprise for businesses.  They are so used to creating content that is sending the user directly to buying their product or service.  However, if you think about businesses that you follow on social media, why do you follow them?  Is it because they are always pushing you to buy or are they being useful?  Are they sharing tips and tricks that might be useful to you as a customer?  Perhaps they are sharing some content that makes you smile?  Or maybe they are sharing articles that they came across that you might like to read?

Tip 2: Choose your social media platform carefully

This might sound like I’m trying to scare you.  I’m not!  I would just like you to think carefully about your target audience.  I give this example when I’m training businesses and it’s amazing the amount of “light bulb moments” that I see happening before me.  For example, Instagram tends to have a following of the under 35 age cohort.  If you’re across the way only posting on Facebook (which tends to be fore over 35s), then you’re probably missing an opportunity.

You really need to use the social media platform(s) that your target audience are using.  If you’re not, then your fantastic content could be on the wrong platform and targeting the wrong audience.

Tip 3: You can’t be on every social media platform

Generally, small and medium businesses don’t have big marketing budgets or lots of marketing resources.  For that reason I always say that your business should just have one or two social media accounts and use them well.  Apparently, there are over 800 social media platforms (including messaging apps).  Again, I say be in tune with your target audience.  If they are all consuming media and spending their time on Twitter, then that’s the social media platform for you.  Your choice of social media platform has to be in line with your customers or potential customers.  If you are in the Business to Business space, then LinkedIn is a very powerful social media platform for you.

If you have resources, budget and content, then use more than one or two social media platforms.
