So just how do you Stand Out on Social Media?
We’ll be honest from the start and not say it is easy. It’s not! However, there are plenty of things that you can do or change on your social media for your business.
First off, have you got a social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) account? If so, make sure that your profile, bio, etc. are all completed. Do you have your logo visible? Are the images that you’re using professional and reflecting your brand’s image? Are your social media accounts easy to find? Have you got a link directly to your business social media account from your website?
Post Regularly
By posting regularly on social media you are confirming that you’re open for business and that your followers engagement means something to you. Just because all of your posts aren’t getting likes and comments, doesn’t mean that they’re not seen by lots of your followers. I might see an offer on your Facebook page that interests me, but not necessarily like, comment or share it. But I am aware. And isn’t brand awareness one of the bonuses of social media?!
Tell Your Story
Ok, so this might not work for every business. However, every business has a story. Why did you start up your business? How long are you in business? Why did you set up your business in that particular area? Has your personal background got something to do with your business? Who funded your business? Is your business a family run business or a one man show? Did you change your area of study or swot up in your chosen area just so you could set up or diversify your business?
These questions might spark some ideas of what you’d like to share in terms of your story. Customers tell me that they don’t want to involve their family in their business or share their photos. That’s fine! There are certain things that you can keep to yourself, but snippets of your reason for being are often of interest to your followers.
Share Special Offers
Coming up to the Christmas season (yes, I did mention the “C” word!!), you will want to share your business offers. You might have a special offer for Black Friday weekend, or promote a customer Christmas evening in store. If you don’t promote any special offers, no matter how frequently they are available, then how will your new and existing customers know?
Celebrate your Staff and Business
You might have staff that have won Employee of the Month. Or your Business might have recently won an Award. Why not share the good news on social media? In Ireland, we often shy away from sharing our wins. We don’t want to brag! Well, if you don’t brag about your business then nobody else is going to do it for you! Share the good news stories as everyone loves a story with a happy ending!
Engage Influencers to Boost Posts
Ok, so this might not be easy to do in every business. However, lots of celebrities are ordinary people and they buy from ordinary businesses. I’ve seen plenty of celebrities on social media posting about a brand or product that they are using. If you’re running a hair or beauty salon you might have somebody famous attend as a customer. Without stalking them (and with their permission) you can ask them nicely for a selfie and share it on your social media. Look at the fantastic story of a successful Irish Business – The Irish Fairy Door Company. The Kardashian clan loved their product, shared it on social media and immediately boosted orders by a phenomenal amount for what was a small Irish business.
Drive Sales
But not too much!! Nobody wants to see “buy me, buy me” all over your social media account. In the marketing world, there is an unwritten rule that 80% of your content should be non-selling, while 20% can be about selling. Customers will get bored of your social media presence if they are constantly bombarded with your product or service. Just remember what businesses you follow on social media. What ones do you like and why? There might be something to learn from your own social media consumption.
