Just what is Digital Marketing?

Digital Marketing means many things to many people.  For most business owners their minds go straight to the world of social media.  From our perspective, we see Digital marketing as quite a broad term that encompasses all marketing efforts that use an electronic device or the internet.  The digital element is the internet, the marketing element is the promotion or advertisement of the product or service.

Essentially, it’s an umbrella term for various online marketing strategies and tactics aimed at reaching your target audience through digital channels. Digital marketing leverages the power of the internet and digital technologies to connect with potential customers in what should be a more personalised and cost-effective way compared to traditional marketing methods.

At Lush Marketing, you’ll know that we believe that both digital and traditional marketing still have a place.  Sometimes separately and sometimes alongside one another as part of your overall marketing strategy.

There are honestly so many strands or elements to digital marketing.  Just some of these include:

Search Engine Optimisation:

Otherwise known as SEO.  This is the optimisation of your website and content to try to rank highly in the search engine (e.g. Google) results.  Key words play a key part to this.  But, put simply, SEO is just one small element of Digital Marketing.  That said, it is not so small as there are specific agencies that deal specifically and only with SEO.

Content Marketing:

This is one of our favourites here at Lush Marketing.  It is about creating and distributing relevant and consistent content targeted at the right audience.  Examples of Content Marketing are blogs, such as this, videos, infographics, etc.

Social Media Marketing:

Love it or hate it, social media platforms can help businesses to build brand awareness.  You can create and post content across the relevant social media platforms.  The main aim here is to reach and engage with your target audience.

Email Marketing:

Anyone else getting the Black Friday emails since the 1st November and even before?!!  Email can be a great way to communicate with your target audience, sharing promotions (the aforementioned Black Friday!) and to build customer relationships.  Be careful though, you can kill customer relationships by spamming or sending too many emails.  Just how many have you unsubscribed from when you’re in bad humour?  Too much?!  It is part of the digital marketing mix though.

Pay-Per-Click:

Otherwise known as PPC Advertising:  This is also an element of digital marketing.  You can run paid advertising campaigns through platforms such as Google or social media platforms.  The main aim is to drive traffic to your website.  This in turn will drive brand awareness, sales, etc.

Video Marketing:

Anyone heard of the term YouTubers?!  Yes, it’s a thing!  If you have young kids at home, they may well be telling you that this is what they’re going to be when they grow up!  Maybe they will!!!  Lots of your target audience are consuming video content, the stats tell us that it is still increasing more and more.  So, video content can help engage your target audience too.

These are just some of the elements of Digital Marketing.  It really is such a broad term and it covers so much.  From a business perspective, it helps you to potentially reach a global audience.  This may not have been achievable by so many prior to the age of digital.

In Conclusion:

The beauty of digital is that you really can target very specific things like demographics, ages, etc.  You can also look back on the analytics to see what is working and what isn’t.  Online is where so many of us, including our customers, hang out.  That’s essentially what digital marketing is helping you to do too.
